Foster care is temporary care in a safe, supportive and stable environment for children who have been removed from their homes from their birth parents due to parental neglect, abuse or abandonment. Foster care is not intended as a long term solution. Children should be removed as soon as possible to permanent, stable relationships and life circumstances that are essential to their physical and emotional well-being. Permanency is the goal for each child. There are over 55,000 children in foster care in California; 31 percent of children in foster care are placed with relatives.
